South Myrtle Beach Golf

South Myrtle Beach Golf is a southern treat for golf lovers. South Myrtle Beach is home to some of the Grand Strand’s older yet extremely well-maintained courses. The courses have the rolling greens and impeccable designs you have come to expect of Myrtle Beach, while being ensconced in beautiful, natural setting. Playing these courses among giant oaks and Spanish moss is like taking a step back in time.

Some of the courses found along the South Strand are in Pawleys Island. Here you may visit Caledonia Golf and Fish Club which was designed by Mike Strantz and was one of his first designs after honing his craft under the tutelage of Tom Fazio. Caledonia is set on a historic rice plantation and was designed with the goal in mind of moving as little dirt as possible.

Another wonderful course in Pawleys Island is the Heritage Club. The course is covered with over 600 acres of giant magnolias, 300-year-old oaks, fresh water lakes and marshes.

Willbrook Plantation Golf Club, located south in Litchfield, winds through mid centuries old oak forests and was featured on the award-winning television show "Nature Scene" for its peaceful coexistence of golfers and nature.

Wachesaw Plantation Club in Murrells Inlet was designed by Tom Fazio. Located twenty minutes south of the Myrtle Beach International Airport, Wachesaw Plantation was built on the site of a former rice plantation. Rolling greens, love grass and buff colored bunkers add to its beauty, as do the azaleas, which frame the greens. Wachesaw Plantation has been the site of four nationally-televised, professional golf tournaments on the LPGA Tour: the 1997 Susan G. Koman International, the 1998 and 1999 City of Hope Myrtle Beach Classic, and the 2000 Kathy Ireland/Greens Classic.

Also in Murrells Inlet is one of the most notable golf courses in Myrtle Beach. The Tournament of Players Club, which opened February of 1999, highlights the area’s shift to more high-end golfing. This type of course, designed by Tom Fazio and Lanny Wadkins, set the golf course design standard for the next three years in Myrtle Beach. It is a classic looking course with tight fairways and well-guarded greens. As is the tradition in the low country, the TPC features water holes and wetlands. Towering pine trees provide a peaceful place to play this very challenging course. TPC was the site for the final round of the 1999 Dupont World Amateur Championship and was a finalist of the Toyota National Golf Skills Challenge.

When planning to golf in Myrtle Beach make sure to keep these noted South Myrtle Beach courses in mind.
