Brookgreen Gardens - Myrtle Beach, SC

Brookgreen Gardens, located just south of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, is made up of six gardens The Dianna Garden, The Children's Garden, Carolina Terrace, Dogwood Garden, Palmetto Garden and Fountain of the Muses Garden. These make up the cultivated gardens of Brookgreen Gardens. There is also an Arboretum, which is a facility where trees and shrubs are cultivated for exhibition. The Arboretum is a cross over to the wilder, natural gardens of the Lowcountry Garden home of the Lowcountry history and wildlife Preserve.

The Dianna Garden is noted for it's giant 250-year-old live oaks. These oaks were planted in the early 1700s and frame the garden space like a "living cathedral”. The Children's garden is located in the lower right side of the Dianna Garden. A Kitchen Garden is also found sheltered in this space.

The Carolina Terrace was renovated in 2004. It is a very formal garden and features a variety of mature trees and shrubs, perennials, and roses.

The Dogwood Garden was originally laid out prior to WWII and was not completed until the war's conclusion in 1945.

The State tree of South Carolina is the Palmetto tree and no garden would be complete with out a Palmetto Garden. This garden is named for it high volume usage of the Sable palmetto and was completed in 1950.

The Fountain of the Muses Garden is a bright display of large blooming bulbs. It highlights the predominant sculpture of Brookgreen Gardens, which was created by Anna Huntington a world-renowned sculptress herself. Through out Brookgreen Gardens you may see her work along with other predominant American sculptures.

Sculptures have been added through the years, among the cultural and native plants of the Lowcountry Gardens. The Sculptures and horticulture have been designed to work hand in hand to enhance the beauty of each.
